Our Top 5 Geocaches in Namibia
Namibia is a vast country with a great variety of natural wonders and endless dirt roads to keep one entertained. During our recent trip through this spectacular country, we had the opportunity to add a smiley to some of its caches. Our top five caches in no particular order are listed below.
GC7YTX9 – Vermillion Crossing
On the gravel road to Walvisbay, you will pass one of the five major circles of latitude marked on the world map. This board is one of the most colourful covered boards, made of all sorts of stickers pasted by travellers that stopped at the Tropic of Capricorn.

GC3923Z – Wild Horses
Visiting this cache at the Wild Horses Viewpoint will almost guarantee the sighting of some wild horses as they drink from the trough at Garub. In 1915, when the German’s retreated from South-West Africa, it is said that some of their horses we left behind. Today, they’ve adapted to the merciless and dry Namibian desert landscape.
GC12CXP – Ghosts of time
The road to get to this incredible section of Namibia will leave you in awe. Pack in sunscreen, hat, comfortable shoes (to climb sand), water and lots of energy to take up all the challenges that come in this environment. You’ll be amazed by the contrast of colours in your surroundings, ranging from the white salted dry pans and apricot coloured dunes to shades of brown and black trees and blue skies. Read more about our trip to Sossusvlei here.
GC3928Q – Fish River Canyon View
Prepare yourself for the depth of this canyon, the vast length of the river, the layers that make up this plateau and take in the surrounding beauty of colour. If you’re lucky enough, cheer a group starting their 5-day hike into the Fish River Canyon. The hike starts at Hobas and takes the average hiker 5 days to reach their destination at Ai-Ais.

GC14D7Q – Pelican Point Lighthouse
Located on the coast near Walvis Bay. Engage in 4×4, be prepared for thick sand, water crossings and other vehicle-related adventure. On route, you will see jackals, seal colonies and flamingos and Pelicans. Stay on existing and often used tracks. You’ll be blown away by this amazing location. According to sources, when the lighthouse was originally built it was placed at the tip of the peninsula, but due to continuing sand deposits from the Western side, the peninsula has grown to extend to its current distance from the lighthouse. The cache is located on the premises of the Pelican Point Lodge. We met one of the staff members and had him take a photo of us at the location. Take note of the amazing lodge. This exclusive lodge can only be accessed by 4×4 and due to its remoteness, all meals are included in the price.
This post forms part of our 2019 Namibia Road Trip. We planned an epic road trip the months leading up to June and it was worth every bit of planning, research and expense. We visited Augrabies, Fish River Canyon, Luderitz, Aus and Spitzkoppe to name only a few. We recommend the trip to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We will try to give as much up to date information as possible in this series of articles but recommend you check the local websites for the latest information before embarking on your journey.
